convention at the time, and I was only recording it for my own use.

This exact picking pattern continues throughout the entire song
(even--as you can see--on chords whose root is not on the 5th string),
the only variation being in the bridge when the 2nd string is played
instead of the first string:

If you are new to finger-picking, it might help to start by isolating
the bass line:
